Everything was against me: hustling people, noise, cars and trucks driving past me and blocking me from sight. This had a huge impact on the reception of the performance, because, in part, external factors disrupted people’s attention. I had the chance to work according to the old formula, the desire to get attention. I could have, for instance, unrolled artificial grass or a red carpet across the whole crosswalk, or painted the stripes different colors. In this quite simple and predictable way I would have marked out the scene of action and set it apart to get the pedestrians’ awareness that something important was happening here. Then my performance would have fallen in line with the old formulae based on getting the audience’s attention, which the performer is always after.
